Inclusive Research Methodologies are powerful, rigorous frameworks for addressing systemic biases and power dynamics that often marginalize certain population groups.

The Issue

Traditional Western research methodologies have long overlooked lived experiences, cultural contexts, and local knowledge as essential forms of evidence, reinforcing power imbalances in the research process. Inclusive methodologies seek to rectify these imbalances and create a more inclusive and equitable framework for knowledge production.

Four Methodologies for Inclusive Research

By integrating four inclusive approaches, research can ensure that diverse perspectives are valued and that research outcomes are relevant and beneficial to all communities involved:

• Decolonizing Research Methodology: Highlights the importance of local knowledge and marginalized perspectives, advocating for their recognition and validation in research.
• Culturally Responsive and Equitable Evaluation: Integrates diversity, inclusion, and equity throughout research and evaluation, ensuring that the research processes and outcomes are relevant and beneficial to diverse cultural contexts.
• Anti-Racist Research: Seeks to dismantle institutional racism through nonracist research methods and ensures that findings benefit and empower the target population.
• Liberatory Research: Draws from Indigenous methodologies, postcolonial and decolonial studies, and Black feminist thought to create more inclusive and equitable knowledge.

Themes Spanning the Four Methodologies

Several themes emerged through liberatory, decolonizing, culturally responsive, and anti-racist approaches. This overlap emphasizes the interconnectedness of methodologies and highlights the importance of integrating these practices to enhance the quality and impact of research.
