Integrative Action for Resilience: Progress Through Community-Research Partnerships

The Integrative Action for Resilience initiative is a two-phase opportunity for local community leaders—who are interested in designing and implementing rigorous resilience research to generate evidence that can inform their own decision-making about policies and projects needed to build resilience in their community, and for researchers—who are interested in partnering in new ways with community-based organizations to apply their analytic capabilities to community-identified challenges. This is a unique opportunity to connect community leaders and researchers who have not worked together before but may be interested and well-suited to pursue resilience research together. Current community-research partnerships are important, but this call is for new partnerships to develop between community leaders and researchers who have not previously worked together but will find complementary benefits from engagement.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

  • Phase 1 applicants must be either a community leader representing a community-based organization (nonprofit, service provider, faith-based, coalition, etc.) or a researcher representing a research organization (university, nonprofit, consulting firm, etc.).
  • To advance to Phase 2, applicant organizations must be a part of a community-research partnership established in Phase 1.
  • The community leader must represent the collaboration and their home organization must be the lead contact in the application. The community organization will be the prime recipient of funds with subcontracting to the research organization.
  • Applicant organizations must be either public entities or nonprofit organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and are not private foundations or nonfunctionally integrated Type III supporting organizations. The Foundation may require additional documentation.
  • Applicant organizations must be based in the United States or its territories.
  • Individual candidates for receipt of award funds must be U.S. Citizens or permanent residents,** or individuals granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”) status by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services at the time of application and must not be receiving support from other research fellowships/traineeships at the time they begin the program.
  • Additionally, individual candidates for receipt of award funds cannot be related by blood or marriage to any Officer*** or Trustee of RWJF, or be a descendant of its founder, Robert Wood Johnson.

June 7–June 8, 2018
Mandatory applicant meeting for those invited from Phase 1.

July 27, 2018 (3 p.m. ET)
Deadline for receipt of full proposals.

Total Awards

In Phase 2, RWJF expects to award three-four grants for up to 24 months each, totaling up to approximately $1.4 million for this body of work.
