2017 Call for Proposals

The aim of the New Jersey Health Initiatives (NJHI): Next Generation Community Leaders program is to provide communities the resources and tools to engage teams of 10-15 youth and build their skills and capacity to become future community leaders. The objective will be met through the following actions:

  1. Develop Civic Engagement and Leadership Skills.
  2. Engage Youth in Meaningful Summer Employment.
  3. Guide Youth Civic Engagement.
  4. Participate in an Alumni Network.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

  • Applicant organizations must be based in New Jersey.
  • Examples of applicant organizations include, but are not limited to educational institutions, scouting organizations, 4-H clubs, police explorers, faith-based organizations, community-based nonprofits, or other eligible entities that have a demonstrated history of working successfully to provide young people the skills to become healthy, active, productive adults.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a relationship and commitment to working with both municipal government and a multi-sector, community-focused coalition. Applicant organizations will be required to submit letters of commitment from a municipal government agency and from an existing multi-sector coalition. Each letter should address how youth from this project will be engaged with that entity, such as including youth on an existing youth advisory board or how a youth advisory board will be formed as a result of this project.
  • Applicant organizations must be either public entities or nonprofit organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and are not private foundations or non-functionally integrated Type III supporting organizations. The Foundation may require additional documentation.

January 12, 2017 (3 p.m. ET)
Deadline for receipt of full proposals.

February 2017
Applicants notified if they will receive a site visit.

March and April 2017
Site visits to selected applicants.

May 2017
Notification of finalists.

June 2017
Notification of awards.

July 1, 2017
Start of grants.

Total Awards

  • Up to 10 awards will be made through this initiative.
  • Grants of up to $200,000 per grantee will be awarded.
  • Grant duration will be three years.
  • Grants will begin on July 1, 2017.
