      Hybrid: Flexible Purpose (HFP) Explained

      Hybrid: Flexible Purpose (HFP) Model

As of January 1, 2023, the Foundation has implemented a model we call Hybrid: Flexible Purpose (HFP). RWJF’s innovative operating model is the infrastructure (e.g., policies, practices, protocols, procedures, systems) that forms the basis for how the day-to-day operations are managed, culture is built and nurtured, and mission is delivered. This model is designed to meet the needs of the organization and teams while preserving a high degree of flexibility for employees.

      Office Attendance Requirements

All RWJF employees will be required to come into Foundation offices during the year for purposes related to their position such as critical tasks (e.g., building operations, grantee meetings), organizational events (e.g., training and development), and internally focused team activities. The number of required meetings in Princeton will fluctuate, including the amount of notice given, as teams and the organization determine needs based on the work to advance the mission and build internal relationships and culture.

      Office Availability

All RWJF offices remain open for all Foundation employees for focused work, optional organizational activities, and connecting with colleagues informally as needed for work purposes.

      Travel to Office Responsibility

While employees have flexibility where they live, employees are responsible for covering all expenses incurred from commuting to/from their assigned office for any reason, including all required in-person meetings.

      RWJF Facilities

Currently, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has three office facilities located in Princeton, N.J., New York, N.Y., and Washington, D.C. RWJF headquarters is in Princeton, N.J., the primary north-Atlantic tri-state (NJ-NY-PA) office. RWJF’s policy hub is located in Washington, D.C., the mid-Atlantic tri-state (DEL-MAR-VA) satellite office of RWJF.  The New York, N.Y. office falls within the north-Atlantic regional area and is considered part of the Princeton, N.J. office. Every RWJF new hire must be assigned to a location*. That assignment is known as the Assigned Office Location, and it is the office from which the new hire is primarily employed. The default Assigned Office Location for every RWJF new hire is Princeton, N.J. unless otherwise stated in the new hire’s offer letter or other agreement.

      *Assigned Office Location

An employee’s assigned office location is the primary work location. Expenses incurred related to commuting between an employee’s primary residence and their primary work location are not covered by the organization nor eligible for reimbursement. There may be additional tax, healthcare, leave, and insurance implications when an employee resides outside of the commutable distance of their assigned office location. We recommend that candidates consult with a tax professional to understand what implications, if any, may apply to their individual circumstance.

Please Note: Business travel, as defined by the IRS and in compliance with our Travel Policy, is an expense of the organization and eligible for reimbursement.
