About RWJF
RWJF is a leading national philanthropy dedicated to taking bold leaps to transform health in our lifetime. To get there, we must work to dismantle structural racism and other barriers to health. Through funding, convening, advocacy, and evidence-building, we work side-by-side with communities, practitioners, and institutions to achieve health equity faster and pave the way, together, to a future where health is no longer a privilege, but a right.
Our Guiding Principles
Inspired by our founder, Robert Wood Johnson II, we are working to transform health in our lifetime.
How We Work
We focus on identifying, illuminating, and addressing barriers to health, particularly those caused by structural racism and other forms of discrimination such as sexism, ableism, and prejudice based on sexual orientation.
We build and lift up evidence that deepens our understanding of health. We promote policies and practices that challenge our institutions to be more equitable and effective for all of us. We fund diverse leaders who draw upon both innovative and time-tested strategies to create lasting change. And we create space for practitioners, community leaders, and researchers to come together across sectors. We harness these efforts to achieve health equity—faster and together.
We are working toward a future where health is no longer a privilege, but a right. Reflecting our Guiding Principles, “we act as good stewards of private resources, using them to advance the public’s interest with a focus on helping the most vulnerable.”
Our History
Established as the Johnson New Brunswick Foundation in 1936 by Robert Wood Johnson II, the Foundation was dedicated to helping local people in need. In 1972, we became the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, expanding our mission to improving the health and wellbeing of everyone in America. We continue to be committed to working with communities and institutions to achieve health equity—faster and together.
