President Obama released his FY2017 budget proposal yesterday, kicking off an appropriations process that will ultimately be finalized by Congress later in the year. Proposed funding for nutrition programs includes:
School meals programs: $13 billion for the National School Lunch Program (up from $12.5 billion in FY2016) and and $4.5 billion for the School Breakfast Program (up from $4.3 billion in FY2016). Includes $10 million in grants to expand direct certification of children for school meals to increase enrollment and reduce schools’ administrative burden.
Summer meals: $12 billion over 10 years to make permanent the Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children (Summer EBT) program, which provides nutrition benefits during summer months to families whose children get free or reduced-price meals in school
School food service equipment: $35 million (up from $30 billion in FY2016).
