We need new generation of bold leaders who are experienced on the front lines, who can engage in scientific discovery and successfully maneuver in the policy and innovation arenas, as well as in boardrooms. Nurses must be a part of those leadership efforts. In particular, PhD-prepared nurse scientists, policymakers, and innovators are uniquely suited to seek and identify solutions to simple and complex problems that make a difference in the lives of individuals, families and communities.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture issued its final ‘Smart Snacks in School rule, which makes permanent the updated nutrition standards covering school snack food and beverages served and sold outside schools meals programs. Under an interim final rule that took effect for the 2014-2015 school year, schools have been serving more fruits and vegetables, along with items containing more whole grains, as snacks, with limits on the amount of fat, added sugar, and sodium. Nutrition standards for snacks have been linked with healthier diets for children, are widely supported by parents, and schools offering both healthier meals and snacks report steady foodservice revenue overall.
