"From all walks of life, we are united in one purpose: To create healthy, livable, sustainable communities," proclaims the home page of CommunityCommons.org, a new resource for the multitude of partners working to create healthier communities, from health departments to philanthropies to businesses. The site was developed by Advancing the Movement, a partnership of community-based initiatives, public and private funders and academic leaders, with financial support coming from a variety of sources including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the YMCA. The group hopes for the collaborative website to serve as a bridge across all the potential players in the community health movement.
"Here you'll find real stories and real data to help you make a real impact on your community," said Wayne Giles, MD, MS, Director of the Division of Population Health at the CDC, in a welcome video for the site. "An impact like addressing chronic diseases and health disparities, bringing healthy, affordable foods to your neighborhoods, creating living-wage jobs and safe streets, and improving the environments where we work, live and play."
Among the key features of the Community Commons website:
- A searchable database of over 3,000 place-based, multi-sector initiatives, many of which are profiled with in-depth impact data and videos.
- The ability to make community data maps for free (registration required) of everything from food deserts to play deserts to the interface of jobs and poverty and disease rates and life expectancy.
