The program officer (PO) or senior program officer (SPO) should be a strategist who thoroughly enjoys and appreciates the intersection between health and social issues. This person should be an “out of the box” thinker who initiates and supports ideas that address the multiple factors which affect health of vulnerable populations where they live, learn, work and play. The officer will need to be able to pick up new and different areas in the portfolio and be excited by the opportunity to develop and grow promising programs that have the potential for wide-spread replication. The officer should display a genuine desire to work with all members of the Vulnerable Populations Portfolio and serve as a mentor and colleague to members of the team and throughout the organization. In this role, grace, humility and a sense of humor will go a long way to the success of the officer.
This person should provide intellectual and organizational leadership and inspiration in finding new ideas, designing and implementing new initiatives, evaluating proposals, monitoring programs and grants, learning from program investments, activities and creating impact. As with staff at all levels of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the program officer/senior program officer is expected to demonstrate a passionate commitment to the Foundation’s mission of improving health and health care for all Americans and to the guiding principles and promise that undergird that mission.
