Stone Soup Group Integrates Care for Special Needs Children in Alaska
Dates of Project: July 1993 through July 2002
Description: The project focused on direct services to parents through trainings and help with system navigation and service coordination and on development of a statewide system of support for children with developmental disabilities and behavioral challenges and their families.
Key Results
The project team:
- Identified and engaged with collaborators to design and sustain a statewide system of support for families with children who have developmental disabilities and challenging behaviors.
- Trained a total 1,494 people (family members, teachers, school principals, community providers, and others) at sessions throughout the state of Alaska using the positive behavioral support model, an evidence-based approach to eliminating difficult behaviors and replacing them with pro-social skills.
- Coordinated and supported expansion of behavioral services for children to other Alaska communities
- Improved parent-to-parent contacts so that families can provide advice and support to each other.
