Tax Preparers Could Help Most Uninsured Get Covered

More than 74 percent of uninsured consumers who qualify for insurance affordability programs under the ACA file federal income tax returns. This includes over 90 percent of consumers under age 35 who are eligible for subsidies to pay for qualified health plans.

Tax preparers are a promising source of application assistance for these uninsured. Most low-income taxpayers file with the aid of tax preparers, including nearly two-thirds of people who claim the earned income tax credit.

Tax preparers offer an innovative and timely approach to reach the majority of eligible uninsured, including young adults whose participation levels many believe will determine the ACA's eventual success or failure.
