Fine Tuning Economic Empowerment Tools for Battered South Asian Women
Field of Work: Assisting survivors of domestic violence to become economically independent
Problem Synopsis: Victims of domestic violence who leave abusive relationships face challenges to their economic survival. These challenges are compounded in immigrant communities, where women often are isolated by culture and language.
Synopsis of the Work: Manavi, a New Brunswick, N.J.-based nonprofit, launched a program to help South Asian women who were survivors of domestic violence to achieve economic self-sufficiency.
From 2009 to 2011, Manavi staff created a set of culturally-specific training and resource materials, including a training curriculum, an employment search toolkit, and a job interviewing video.
Manavi staff and volunteers delivered economic empowerment training to some 45 South Asian women through an employment clinic and individual consultations.
