Problem Synopsis: "Consumer Guides for Getting and Keeping Health Insurance" had been published by the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute since 1998 with grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), but an unexpected termination of funding in 2008 put a stop to updates at a time when the debate over national health reform was heating up.

Synopsis of the Work: A 2008 grant from RWJF enabled Georgetown University to update the guides for the 15 states with the most urgent need for new content.

Key Results

  • Georgetown University Health Policy Institute updated the guides for 15 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Montana, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Texas. Consumers for Affordable Health Care (CAHC) conducting a survey of consumer and patient organizations about the guides; and Georgetown has implemented some of the recommendations made by these organizations.
