Between 2001 and 2007, staff at the Decatur, Ga.-based Task Force for Child Survival and Development established the Public Health Informatics Institute to strengthen the information systems used in public health practice and to promote collaborative strategies for that effort.

Key Results

  • Institute staff:

    • Influenced key individuals in the field of public health informatics to support a collaborative approach for analyzing business functions and developing requirements for information systems.
    • Led a collaborative process to define requirements and develop a set of design specifications for a public health laboratory information management system (LIMS). The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) reviewed and adopted the specifications.
    • Developed a business case model for integrated child health information systems for use by state health departments, building on previous work at All Kids Count, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)-funded national program that promoted the use of computerized immunization registries nationwide.
    • Provided technical assistance to the RWJF national program InformationLinks, which sought to stimulate the participation of public health agencies in health information exchanges—a mechanism for sharing electronic data about patients to promote health.
