From 2004 to 2006, the Foundation for the Mid South engaged stakeholders in a planning process to launch the Mid South Health Initiative, designed to identify strategies that would improve the health of people in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, particularly in rural, urban and minority communities.
During the grant period, Foundation for the Mid South staff:
- Partnered with the Southern Regional Health Consortium to produce the Mid South Health Initiative's Resource Report: Creating Community Environments that Promote Comprehensive Health and Wellness. The report includes a demographic profile of the region, health-improvement strategies and profiles of innovative programs.
- Organized a regional conference held in January 2006 that drew some 120 participants to talk about opportunities for advancing the health of the region.
- Appointed a Mid South Health Advisory Committee that met in June 2006 to set goals for the health initiative. The advisory committee also provided guidelines on grantmaking related to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which occurred during this grant period.
