Trailer for Documentary on Uninsured in America Focuses on Mom with Breast Cancer Who Cannot Afford Treatment

From 2005 to 2006, Julie Winokur and Ed Kashi of Talking Eyes Media, (a nonprofit organization in Montclair, N.J., that advocates for social change through books, exhibitions, web sites and films), began research and storyline development on a documentary on the uninsured and underinsured in America, and produced a film trailer for the documentary. They created the trailer to raise the funds needed to complete the documentary, secure commitments to air it and build partnerships with health care advocacy organizations.

Key Results

Project staff produced a film trailer for the documentary Denied: Health Care Crisis in America. The trailer features a 46-year-old uninsured mother of two children who died of breast cancer during the production of the trailer because she could not afford treatment.

  • As of April 2008, project staff had raised $164,000 toward the production of the documentary and $15,000 toward the dissemination of the film.
