"Trinkets and Trash" is a unique collection of past and current tobacco products and the marketing items that promote these products. The collection serves as:

  • A historical record of the industry's ever-changing strategies to permeate the culture with a harmful product.
  • An important resource for advocacy efforts and for educating the public about tobacco industry activities.

Key Results

  • Since 1996, staff members at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey have updated and added to the collection—and loaned out items to tobacco control advocates, the media and others. A number of the litigation efforts against the tobacco industry during the mid to late 1990s used items from the collection as exhibits.

    As of 2005, some 7,200 items in the collection had been converted to digital images—easily searchable and available for download.
