Teens Attend Smart Growth Conference and Become Involved in Community Planning and Design

Developing an advocacy plan for youth to prevent childhood obesity

The California Center gathered and prepared a group of 31 teens to participate in the 2003 Smart Growth Network conference on community planning and design.

Center staff also helped the teens plan projects to implement back home and wrote a handbook on youth engagement in community planning and design.

Key Results

  • Some 14 teens attended the meeting with scholarships funded by RWJF. Seventeen additional youth received scholarships from other organizations.

  • Some 22 of the 31 teens who attended submitted reports on their community projects. Projects included community planning presentations to peers and elected officials and sitting on local planning boards and commissions.

  • California Center staff wrote the handbook, Youth Voices in Community Design: A How-to Guide for Adults on Involving Youth in Community Planning. Center staff created an online library to accompany the handbook.

  • Center staff wrote a report (unpublished as of March 2006) that describes the rationale for engaging teens in obesity prevention efforts and offers recommendations on the most effective ways to involve, train and support youth.
