No Smoking with Those Thin Mints
The Delaware-Raritan Girl Scout Council in East Brunswick, N.J., worked from 1999 through 2003 to educate Girl Scouts in Central New Jersey about the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke through award programs, anti-smoking rallies, health fairs and summer camp programs.
The project was part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) New Jersey Health Initiatives national program.
- More than 11,500 Girl Scouts participated in the Girl Scouts Against Smoking program, which included promoting an anti-smoking message to their families, friends and communities.
- Smoking among members of Girl Scouts' families decreased by 8 percent from 1999 to 2002.
