University of Rochester Fine-Tunes Curriculum to Better Train Physicians

From 1990 through 1997, the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry continued to revise its medical education program, focusing on the clinical curriculum, faculty rewards and recognition, and the educational budget.

This effort was part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's (RWJF) national program, Preparing Physicians for the Future, which was designed to facilitate major undergraduate curriculum reform in U.S. medical schools.

Key Results

Under the grant, the school accomplished the following:

  • Established new teaching methods and class structures in the basic science years.
  • Enhanced clerkships in the third-year clinical curriculum so that students spend more time in physicians' offices and other outpatient settings.
  • Revised the fourth-year curriculum, and added courses, including a Senior Case-Study Seminar.
  • Implemented a system to reward faculty for quality teaching.
  • Added a new requirement for computer literacy for first- and second-year students, library staff, and faculty.
  • Established the Cross-Cultural Education Committee to help incorporate cross-cultural issues into the school's curriculum.
