School-Based Health Centers Get Boost from Voluntary Hospitals
From 1998 to 1999, staff at the Voluntary Hospitals of America (VHA) Health Foundation provided technical assistance on the design, implementation and sustainability of school-based health centers (SBHCs) to health care organizations across the country.
The VHA Health Foundation is a national, not-for-profit foundation created to encourage community health leadership and innovation across the larger health care community through practical research and demonstration projects.
Project staff developed and published a workbook, Making the Healthy Connection: Establishing and Sustaining the Hospital Sponsored School-Based Health Center.
The workbook synthesizes existing material with a focus on hospital sponsorship and offers relevant benchmarks and guidelines for developing school-based health centers.
Project staff developed a resource list of experts who can provide information about school-based health centers to health care organizations.
VHA Health Foundation convened a national conference to present information about developing partnerships between health organizations and school-based health centers.
Some 110 health and education professionals attended the conference, School-Based Health Centers: Making the Healthy Connection, held in Philadelphia, Pa., October 29–30, 1999.
