South Dakota Adult Day Program Uses Technical Assistance from Partners in Caregiving Program to Expand Services, Increase Fees

Partners in Caregiving: The Dementia Services Program

From 1993 to 1996, Senior Day Break (SDB), an adult day program in Sioux Falls, S.D., doubled its enrollment, quadrupled the fees it charges clients for ancillary services, and achieved its goal of consistent financial break-even.

The project was part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Partners in Caregiving: The Dementia Services Program national program.

Key Results

  • Senior Day Break doubled its enrollment, quadrupled the fees it charges clients for ancillary services, and achieved its goal of consistent financial break-even. It achieved this by using technical assistance from Partners in Caregiving program staff to:

    • Strengthen and expand its operations by adding daily service and weekend respite care.
    • Charge separately for ancillary services.
    • Upgrade its computer system.
    • Increase its financial heath and management capabilities.
    • Expand its marketing efforts, in particular reaching out to the rural elderly.
