Old Disease, New Challenge: Tuberculosis in the 1990s

An RWJF National Program

Old Disease, New Challenge: Tuberculosis in the 1990s was a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to develop and evaluate innovative ways of augmenting and assisting public health systems in providing comprehensive tuberculosis (TB) activities.

Five demonstration projects were funded and four other grants were made for a conference, workshops, policy analysis, and coalition building.

At the time this report was written, an evaluation of the program was being conducted by Judith Justice, PhD at the University of California, San Francisco.

Key Findings

  • Among the preliminary findings the evaluator reported was that the most successful projects were those that included a representative group of community organizations in their work, and maintained open lines of communication throughout all aspects of the project.
