The following is a statement from Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, MD, MPH, president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
I proudly congratulate Gary Slutkin, MD, for receiving the highest honor from the State of Illinois, the Order of Lincoln Award.
As the founder and leader of Cure Violence, Gary is a visionary champion in the effort to build a Culture of Health in America and around the world. He has made an immeasurable contribution to the public’s understanding that violence spreads–and can be prevented–like a disease. His Cure Violence model has not only saved thousands of lives in cities like Chicago, New York, and Baltimore; it also has given hope to millions by demonstrating that violence can be stopped using the strategies of public health.
We will never achieve a Culture of Health if our culture of violence goes unchecked. Thanks to Gary’s leadership and vision, we are ever closer to the day when every child has the opportunity to grow up in a strong, supportive, and safe community, and thrive in a world without violence.
