Foundation grantee David Mechanic, Ph.D., has been awarded the Institute of Medicine's 2009 Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health.
Mechanic is university professor and René Dubos Professor of Behavioral Sciences; and director, Institute for Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research, at Rutgers University, in New Brunswick, N.J.
The Sarnat Prize consists of a medal and $20,000. It was presented to Mechanic at IOM's annual meeting in Washington, D.C.
The Sarnat Prize was presented to Mechanic in recognition of his work to increase scientific knowledge about the causes and factors shaping mental health and to improve mental health care services.
The Foundation has supported Mechanic’s efforts to inform and shape health and health care policy debates since 1973. Since 2000, Mechanic has directed the program’s Investigator Award program. He also serves on the advisory committees for the Foundation’s Health and Society Scholars and the Scholars in health policy programs.
