The Role

The vice president and chief information technology officer (VP/CITO) will be responsible for the strategic development and advancement of the use of technology and cyber security for the Foundation. The CITO will provide leadership to the technology team and will work closely with operations leadership, program leaders, and staff in implementing a modern and mission-focused, enterprise-level technology strategy.

Key areas of focus include:

1.     Management and oversight of the Technology team to ensure that all systems are integrated and effective in supporting the overall mission, goals, and objectives of the Foundation.

2.     Directly participating in institutional planning and decision-making as a member of the Operations Leadership team and providing counsel and coordination to the Foundation as designated by the chief operating officer (COO).

3.     Providing high-level, proactive, and aligned Information Technology (IT) partnership to the president, COO, exeuctive vice president of Programs, and peer-level VPs.

4.     Serving as a strategic leader whose role is to advance the Foundation’s mission by supporting the organization’s information technology and cyber security.

What You Will Do

Core Job Responsibilities:

Internal Advisor and Strategic Partner

  • Serve as internal consultant and strategic advisor to the president and Executive Leadership team on information technology and cyber security.
  • Cultivate strong and effective relationships with stakeholders through proactive communication and being an active partner for improving business systems and services.
  • Create a culture of inclusion and communication so that the needs of all staff at all levels impact the IT strategy, roadmap, and tool selection.
  • Create and maintain a good working relationship with other peer organizations within and outside of philanthropic sector.
  • Develop strong relationships with IT service providers with an eye to service levels and cost management.

Strategy and Leadership

  • Create a strategy, vision, and roadmap that aligns with the forward-looking operational vision for the Foundation.
  • Develop an architecture to define a standardized set of technologies for applications, processes, and devices, including an infrastructure migration to the cloud.
  • Create a highly effective and user-friendly digital workplace with a standard set of platforms, tools, and devices for collaboration and employee productivity.
  • Maximize the use of technology to create opportunities for more seamless participation for people with differing abilities.
  • Define a change management process both for IT-related system changes, as well as business processes.
  • Develop a technology strategy for an evolving workplace that supports staff on-site and in any remote working environment.
  • Working with the COO and general counsel, develop a robust information security strategy and program.
  • Keep current and knowledgeable about emerging technologies trends that would benefit the Foundation.


  • Ensure a high-performing IT organization that aligns with other Foundation departments.
  • Lead, manage, and develop an efficient and highly competent technology team who serves as valuable business partners to the management and colleagues throughout the Foundation.
  • Ensure all positions, new or existing, within the IT organization structure foster growth with an emphasis on professional development.
  • Ensure the IT organization embodies the Foundation’s values and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

Strategic Implementation

  • Prepare and manage annual goals and objectives that ensure IT’s ability to deliver on its objectives.
  • Ensure modern delivery, including agile development and product management.
  • Provide an analytical mindset, to define and execute on a data strategy.
  • Lead, define, and develop enterprise data analytics capabilities.
  • Ensure all security standards are annually reviewed, audited, and vetted with organizational leaders.
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy standards for organization-wide data, proprietary information, and related intellectual property through information security and access management.
  • Oversee systems development and implementation across the organization, ensuring platforms and systems are meeting all users’ needs.
  • Ensure that the organization has strong systems analysis and project management skills, so commitments are properly planned, staffed, monitored, and executed.
  • Oversee IT finances, including ongoing purchases, to ensure spending trends are within the annual budget forecast.
  • Optimize costs and look for opportunities for continuous improvement of operations.

Getting Started: In the First Year

The Foundation is at an exciting and pivotal moment in pursuing its vision of a Culture of Health and Health Equity and seeking to realize its Guiding Principles inside and outside the organization. The VP/CITO is a critical partner in these efforts. In the first year, in addition to investing time to know staff, you will focus on:

  • Listening and assessing current needs and creating a fresh strategy, vision, and roadmap that aligns with the forward-looking operational vision for the Foundation.
  • Defining a standardized set of technologies for applications, processes, and devices, including an infrastructure migration to the cloud.
  • Creating multiyear plan for major update to the grants management system.
  • Establishing robust cyber security practices in partnership with the COO and general counsel.
  • Serving as an important contributor in the implementation of the Foundation’s transition to the post-COVID-19 way of work.
  • Assessing and restructuring the current IT division as needed to align with the refreshed strategy.

Who You Are

The successful candidate will have 10+ years of experience of successfully developing, mentoring, and leading IT. Will have relevant experience developing and executing highly effective IT strategies; building and running a digital workplace that fosters collaboration and productivity; establishing robust cyber security practices; and creating a culture of inclusion and business partnership.

In addition, the VP/CITO will demonstrate:  

  • A passionate commitment to supporting the Foundation’s mission and to the Foundation’s Guiding Principles.

  • The ability to understand and articulate the Foundation’s mission and work to many audiences.

  • A deep understanding of how to build a flexible, adaptable, and standardized architecture that will support the Foundation’s current and future needs.
  • Experience defining and supporting an evolving remote and geographically dispersed work environment.
  • A track record of providing digital workplace tools and solutions to enhance staff productivity and ease of work.
  • Very strong communication skills and a track record of building a culture of transparency and business partnership.
  • A data analytics viewpoint and ability to build an impactful data strategy.
  • A track record of building strong relationships across the organization and with our vendor partners.
  • A commitment to cybersecurity and experience developing and leading a robust cyber program.
  • Ability to create a cloud-enabled infrastructure and lead the team in a cloud migration.
  • A background in nonprofit, health care, academia, or related is a plus.
