Deputy Director, Digital Communications

The Opportunity

Reporting to the director, digital Communications, the deputy director, digital Communications is responsible for building a brand identity and digital presence through the creation and dissemination of multimedia content online. This involves managing a content team; collaborating with Communications colleagues, partners, and grantees; and guiding the development, deployment, and evaluation of digital content that ensures an engaged user experience across platforms. Deputy directors are based in the Foundation’s Princeton, N.J., office.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Manage the work of a multi-disciplinary team and coach direct reports for professional development.
  • Formulate a cross-platform, omnichannel content strategy that engages, informs, and influences key audiences.
  • Manage the implementation of  content editorial calendar to coordinate content and plan specific, timely digital campaigns.
  • Plan and oversee creation and delivery of relevant, original, high-quality content in a variety of formats, which align with content, brand strategies and organizational goals, and that meets user needs
  • Manage and develop workflows in line with team and partner firm needs to facilitate smooth and efficient content development, deployment, and evaluation.
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality digital experience for audiences by planning, monitoring and optimizing (SEO) content across RWJF digital properties including blog, email, social, web site and mobile to improve audience and user engagement.
  • Use analytics and metrics to optimize channels ensuring content quality, and a user-centered, performance-focused approach at all times.
  • Analyze campaigns and anecdotal or qualitative data to make recommendations and inform decision-making.

Minimum Requirements

  • Commitment to racial and health equity and the Foundation’s vision, values, and Guiding Principles.
  • Seven (7) to ten (10) years of demonstrated experience in communications, preferably with an organization with various departments and a multidisciplinary staff. Five years of social media communications/marketing or equivalent business experience.
  • Strong digital background with demonstrated, hands-on experience managing digital channels.
  • People management skills, including experience in employee development, performance management, supervising, mentoring, and team-building; able to coalesce a team around a strategic vision and bring a sense of humor and fun to the workplace.
  • Demonstrable social networking experience and social analytics tools knowledge.
  • Excellent writing, editing (photo/video/text), oral presentation, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of integrating content into multiple social distribution channels.
  • Knowledge of web design and search engine optimization (SEO).
  • Ability to coordinate and/or deliver projects within a given timeframe.
  • Ability to manage, mentor and guide staff to develop strengths of individual team members and to build an effective, values-based team.
  • Demonstrated maturity and seasoned judgment; ability to make decisions, justify recommendations, take responsibility for decisions and be responsive and clear.
  • Experience fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment through feedback, where people learn, develop, and thrive.
  • Team player who considers others’ opinions, understand impact on other groups and adapts to change effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills with an attention to detail. Experience handling multiple priorities effectively. Adept at organizing time efficiently.
  • Strong problem-solving skills. Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information skillfully. Develops alternative solutions; works well in group problem solving situations. Ability to demonstrate innovative and analytical approaches to resolutions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g. communications, business, marketing, computer science, etc.) or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

The deputy director will perform job duties in a typical business office environment. Specific physical abilities required by this job include operating basic office equipment. Will be required to attend meetings, potentially both on-site and off-site, via phone or videoconference.
