Grant Results

SUMMARY

On October 1–3, 2007, the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) hosted the "eFolio: A Secure Personal Data Manager Serving Physicians" invitational conference in Baltimore. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) also sponsored the conference.

An eFolio is an electronic physician portfolio of educational tools; it provides educational, developmental and administrative support for physicians. For example, a physician's eFolio might include standardized exam scores, certification status, hospital privileges and so on. The conference hosts recognized that licensing bodies, hospital credentialing committees and specialty boards that grant certifications had a growing interest in the use of electronic physician portfolios.

In May 2007, the conference sponsors held a colloquium as a first step in exploring the feasibility of a national eFolio framework to connect the isolated tools that are available or under development by medical schools, ACGME and other organizations.

Attendees at the October 2007 conference collaborated to delineate a comprehensive vision for this framework and a road map for its implementation.

Key Results

  • On October 1–3, 2007, approximately 80 registrants attended the conference, representing the sponsors as well as a broad array of educators, regulators, potential users, technical experts and vendors.
  • NBME published the proceedings of the conference online, detailing the background, vision and challenges to the implementation of a common national framework and a plan for a pilot electronic physician portfolio.

Funding
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) provided a $28,000 grant to support the conference and the white paper that articulated the vision and a road map for pilot implementation.

After the Grant
Several organizations (including the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the Federation of State Medical Boards, the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Medical Association) met at the following key venues to discuss how to test the feasibility of a national eFolio system with one or more pilots:
