THE PROBLEM

Leadership development programs help prepare individuals and groups to handle complex challenges-including challenges facing the nation's health care system.

However, according to the Center for Creative Leadership, the field has lacked a readily available resource that presents what had been learned from myriad leadership programs about how to develop and support leadership strategies and evaluate their impact.

The leaders of the center — a nonprofit organization in Greensboro, N.C., involved in leadership training and research — proposed that the center would fill this void.

THE PROJECT

The Center for Creative Leadership staff developed a handbook on how to evaluate the effectiveness of leadership development programs.

To help shape the book, the staff convened two conferences attended by some 30 scholars and practitioners in the field of leadership development, including experts invited to author the book chapters. The authors came from the nonprofit, for-profit, academic and government sectors.

At the first conference (March 28–29, 2005, in Greensboro, N.C.), participants developed a consensus on the book's purpose and reviewed proposed topic areas. At the second conference (August 4–5, 2005, in Princeton, N.J.), the authors discussed key ideas from their chapter drafts.

The Center for Creative Leadership subcontracted with a separate nonprofit organization, the Leadership Learning Community in Oakland, Calif., to create a page on its Web site devoted to the book and its content.

Funding

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) supported the project with a solicited grant of $80,900.

RESULTS

  • In 2007, in collaboration with Jossey-Bass publishers, the Center for Creative Leadership published The Handbook of Leadership Development Evaluation — a 632-page presentation of tools, models and approaches used to evaluate leadership development programs.

"This book provides broad and practical information about how to conduct leadership development evaluations using a variety of approaches, many of which have been recently developed," the introduction says.

The book consists of 19 chapters divided into three topic areas:
    • Designing leadership development evaluations.
    • Addressing specific environments for designing and implementing leadership development.
    • Addressing ways in which evaluation can be used to maximize impact rather than only measure and document.

For individual chapter titles and authors, see the companion Web page.

Sales of the book totaled 1,561 copies as of May 2007. (The book is available from a variety of online sources.)
  • The Leadership Learning Community created a companion Web page that provides an overview of the book's content and links to resources described in the book. Between November 2006 and mid–May 2007, 23,767 visitors visited the Web page.
