The Personal Approach
Located in the heart of high-tech Silicon Valley, Calif., the Santa Clara County IRIS made a concerted effort to ensure that the new technology of a registry not only met the needs of its users — the 231 practices, clinics, medical groups and hospitals who administer early childhood immunizations — but also added value to each provider's operations. IRIS staff analyzed each provider's office work flow and developed a plan for improving the flow and immunization practices. Computer skills of each user (providers, nurses, and administrative staff) were assessed so that training could be tailored to effectively meet the specific needs. Training was continually modified based on user feedback and as common preventable problems were identified. Hands-on training in IRIS was not considered complete until user comfort and competence were demonstrated. Follow-up visits were made twice a month and routine meetings scheduled once a month to ensure user satisfaction and support. Although progress bringing all providers on board with the registry was slow, user satisfaction was high.
