  • Creating Leaders for the Future

Based on her organization’s experience with a 68-hospital extension program of the Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) nurse-led, quality improvement initiative, Pamela Austin Thomas, CEO of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE), believes one key to TCAB’s success has been its training of nurse managers to let go of decision-making themselves and instead develop decision-making and leadership skills in bedside nurses. This moves the decision-making process about care closer to patients and their families. Writing in a supplement to the American Journal of Nursing, Thomas asserts TCAB also has the potential to change decision-making in the entire health care system, creating a “new, transformative partnership between management and staff.”
