One in five people in the United States speak a language other than English at home. People with limited English proficiency (LEP) have difficulty understanding information presented to them in their doctor's office. As a result, LEP patients receive less than recommended preventative health services and have poorer medical outcomes than English speakers.
This PowerPoint presentation provides data on the extent of the problem of language barriers and the challenges to hospital staff. It outlines specific goals of the Speaking Together program, core measures and project outcomes for the 10 participating hospital sites.
Any hospital whose staff is seeking to reduce disparities caused by language barriers can use this presentation to help them communicate the case for improving language services for the diverse populations their hospital serves.
