Insurer to Reimburse Physicians for Web-Based Patient Consultations

Schenectady, N.Y.-based health insurance provider MVP Health Care has announced plans to begin reimbursing network physicians for conducting Web-based patient consultations, Health Data Management reports. The insurer says it will provide reimbursements for approximately 22,000 physicians providing services for more than 750,000 patients in New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. It will partner with the independent physician association Mohawk Valley Medical Associates to offer reimbursements and subsidies to physicians who implement the consultation systems. According to Healthcare IT News, the initiative will employ McKesson's RelayHealth Web-based consultation software, which guides patients through a clinical interview to help physicians better evaluate non-urgent symptoms (Goedert, Health Data Management, 10/20/09; Merrill, Healthcare IT News, 10/19/09; RelayHealth release, 10/19/09).
