Cancer Group to Launch Campaign Targeting Native American Women
The American Cancer Society (ACS) is expected to soon launch a breast cancer awareness campaign aimed at Native American women, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader reports. The campaign is expected to include an 11-minute film, produced entirely by Native Americans, created to raise breast cancer awareness among tribe members in South Dakota. According to a spokesperson from the Pierre, S.D., division of the ACS, Native Americans will better connect with the message because it includes members of their own community. The campaign also will include a series of public service announcements. According to the Argus Leader, although breast cancer is relatively uncommon among Native American women, it tends to be more fatal (Young, Sioux Falls Argus Leader, 3/3/09).
