Helping Young Smokers Quit: Identifying Best Practices for Tobacco Cessation

Summary:

The Foundation's program, Helping Young Smokers Quit: Identifying Best Practices for Tobacco Cessation, was designed to evaluate and disseminate effective, developmentally appropriate cessation treatment programs for adolescents who smoke and try unsuccessfully to quit. During this final two-year project period, the Helping Young Smokers Quit (HYSQ) team will focus its efforts on data management, analyses, manuscript development, and the dissemination of findings from HYSQ Phase II, Phase III, and the Case Study of young adult treatment demand. In addition to publications and presentations, the team will focus on the development of two HYSQ final products: the youth smoking cessation program self-evaluation toolkit and public access data sets. The overall aims of this effort are to: (1) finalize the cleaning, management and analyses of Phase II and Phase III data including the development of multi-level analytic models for the four levels of longitudinal data collected during the program evaluations; (2) develop datasets for public access to ensure that the value of this initiative is full realized by the field of youth smoking cessation; (3) explore treatment demand in this population after they have transitioned into young adulthood by presenting the case study focus group outcomes to an expert panel for interpretation and discussion of future directions; (4) disseminate through presentations, publications and the HYSQ Web site the scientific methods and findings that have emerged from the Helping Young Smokers Quit initiative; (5) continue to leverage the use of standard measures among youth tobacco research efforts across the U.S. through cross-project publications; (6) develop a youth smoking cessation program evaluation toolkit that implements standard methods and measures for use by program providers throughout the U.S.; and (7) explore new funding opportunities to sustain the accomplishments of this initiative and further the field of youth tobacco cessation.
