Helping Young Smokers Quit: Identifying Best Practices for Tobacco Cessation

Summary:

The Foundation's program, Helping Young Smokers Quit: Identifying Best Practices for Tobacco Cessation, was designed to evaluate and disseminate effective, developmentally appropriate cessation treatment programs for adolescents who smoke and try unsuccessfully to quit. While a great deal is known about the ingredients of effective smoking cessation programs for adults, relatively little research has been conducted on such programs for youth 12 to 24 years. The University of Illinois at Chicago is leading this effort with support from Westat; the effort has also received funding from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The overarching question for the program's Phase II evaluation is "what program components, processes, and contextual factors are associated with increased recruitment, retention, and quit rates." Westat, through contracts with NCI, CDC, and the Foundation, will conduct the evaluation. Forty-four sites have been selected for the HYSQ study. Westat will assign a dedicated team of program coordinators who will maintain contact with the sites' liaisons; contact and enroll respondents and collect, edit, and key-enter survey data; identify, enroll, and collect survey and biochemical validation data from the youth participants; collaborate with the University of Illinois at Chicago to design the databases; and process the keyed survey and assemble it into analytical data files covering each component and round of data collection.
