The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation report Health Reform: The Cost of Failure projects that if federal reform efforts are not enacted quickly and decisively, as many as 65.7 million Americans could be uninsured within 10 years. Prepared by the Urban Institute the analysis found that under any economic scenario there would be a tremendous strain on business owners and their employees as premiums increase significantly.

The following PowerPoint chart pack includes graphics of the report’s key findings:

  • People would see their health care costs increase anywhere from 46-68 percent.
  • Businesses could see their health care costs double. Even in the best scenario, employer spending on premiums would increase 72 percent.
  • Spending on government insurance programs could double, with up to 13.3 million more people enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP.
  • Millions more would be uninsured—up to 65.7 million in the worst case, 53.1 million in the best case.
