Nursing initiatives that improve the quality of care and help people lead healthier lives can serve as a guide for Congress and the Obama administration as they seek to transform our current health care system. Nurses have created model programs in acute care, primary care, and public health settings that are improving the health status of individuals and communities.

These initiatives are expanding access, improving quality, promoting prevention, and driving down costs, and they have gained recognition from consumer groups, insurers, physicians, states, and the federal government. This brief profiles innovative programs that have been designed, led, or implemented by nurses; it draws out their policy implications; and it highlights the perspectives of leading health policy experts.
