Minority Medical Students Receive Boost in Scholarships from 1991-1996

National Medical Fellowships (NMF) expanded its scholarship support for minority medical students from approximately 300 students in 1990–1991 to 2,528 from 1991–1996.
NMF is the only national, private, nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities in medicine.
Key Results
During the five-year grant period, National Medical Fellowships accomplished the following:
- Gave a total of $4,734,692 to 2,528 awardees, divided about equally between first- and second-year medical students.
- For the school year 1994–1995, awarded nearly 20 percent of scholarships to students from families with total annual incomes of less than $4,000.
- Created a database of approximately 10,000 former award recipients, and solicited financial support from them.
Funding
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) supported this effort from September 1991 to August 1996 with a $5 million grant.
