  • Grant Results Report

From 2001 to 2005, Emergency department (ED) staff at the Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu and three partner institutions instructed pediatric asthma patients and their parents in asthma management.

Project staff tracked the patients through follow-up telephone interviews three weeks and three months after the emergency department visits.

The project was part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) national program Managing Pediatric Asthma: Emergency Department Demonstration Program (for more information see Grant Results).

Key Results and Conclusions
The project team reported in an April 2006 article in Pediatrics, "Change in Approach and Delivery of Medical Care in Children With Asthma: Results From a Multicenter Emergency Department Educational Asthma Management Program":

  • Use of controller medications increased after the educational intervention.
  • The project demonstrated that "ED-based interventions are possible and effective."

Funding
RWJF supported this project through two grants totaling $871,880.

Grant Results Reports
RWJF produces Grant Results reports on its funded initiatives. External writers and editors read the entire grant to prepare each report, which is then reviewed by RWJF staff and by the director of the initiative. Any reviewer in the chain may ask for changes in the report to improve clarity or accuracy.
