  • Grant Results Report

Baylor College of Medicine and four partnering hospitals in the Houston-Galveston area of Texas collected information on emergency department (ED) pediatric asthma visits. The project team also studied the impact of an intervention to educate ED pediatric asthma patients and parents in managing the disease.

The project was part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) national program Managing Pediatric Asthma: Emergency Department Demonstration Program (for more information see Grant Results).

Key Results and Findings

  • The project captured data on 6,222 pediatric asthma encounters in a two-year period. A majority of the children had mild asthma by both chronic and acute severity classifications.
  • Patients with mild intermittent asthma who received the educational intervention had significantly fewer urgent care/emergency department visits in the nine months following the intervention compared to similar patients in the control group.

Funding
RWJF supported the project from October 2001 through December 2004 with an $862,492 grant.

Grant Results Reports
RWJF produces Grant Results reports on its funded initiatives. External writers and editors read the entire grant to prepare each report, which is then reviewed by RWJF staff and by the director of the initiative. Any reviewer in the chain may ask for changes in the report to improve clarity or accuracy.
