This grants results special report, written by Janet Heroux, M.H.S., M.B.A., explores physical activity at the community level and asks: What works; what doesn't?

Foundation program staff selected 25 initiatives for examination, hoping that a wide range of approaches might provide answers. The approaches included:

  • Community-wide campaigns that promote physical activity.
  • Programs that teach behavioral-change skills.
  • Interventions that build social support networks for physical activity.
  • The creation of—or enhanced access to—walking or biking trails, exercise facilities and other places for activity.
  • Changes in community design and practices to promote physical activity.

Grant Results special reports
RWJF's Grant Results Reporting Unit produces occasional special reports on wide ranging topics, such as RWJF's response to Hurricane Katrina or the Foundation's support for an array of community-based initiatives to increase physical activity. These reports are prepared, based on grant files, by external writers and reviewed by RWJF staff and external stakeholders. Any reviewer in the chain may ask for changes in the report to improve clarity or accuracy.

Grant Results topic summaries
The Grant Results Reporting Unit synthesizes the results, findings and lessons learned from an array of fully vetted Grant Results reports on topics the Foundation has addressed such as long-term care, rural health care access or working with schools. Reports are reviewed by program officers and unit staff.
