Testing online social networking tools within a game-based school curriculum to help children actively design how they learn about health and wellness

Summary:

The purpose of this project is for Being Me, a social-networking site, to allow middle school students from urban, and often underserved, communities in New York City understand and manage their own ecologies of health and wellness. Quest to Learn, a new 6th- to 12th-grade public school, will serve as Being Me's initial site. A central mission of Quest to Learn is to create a school relevant to 21st-century learning. On the Being Me site, students can document, discover, explore and play with a range of ideas related to health and wellness. Working in tandem, Being Me and Quest to Learn will create a healthy school environment for learning and play. In addition to the creation of the Being Me site, others deliverables will be the creation of a wellness curriculum to be integrated into the core curriculum of the school; and a program to train Quest to Learn teachers in all aspects of Being Me and its curriculum.
