Summary:

This grant will help Working Today/Freelancers Union establish Freelancers Insurance Company to provide affordable health insurance coverage to the independent workforce, focusing on low- and moderate-income workers and their families. The insurance product will be innovative in that it will be driven by consumer choice; include both traditional and alternative health benefits; and offer incentives for wellness care, with the nontraditional benefits delivered through a network of providers negotiated through Freelancers Union, many of whom are members of the Union themselves. At the completion of this grant, Freelancers Insurance Company plans to be fully operational and self-sustaining, expanding beyond the New York City metropolitan area to demonstrate broader viability. This funding will also allow Freelancers Union to develop and expand the plan types.
