Aiming to enhance care quality and increase staff efficiency, Steubenville, Ohio-based Trinity Hospital West will soon open a new patient care unit that features a number of evidence-based design elements, the Intelligencer/Wheeling News-Register reports. Located on the second and third floors of a newly constructed tower, the two 20-bed units feature all private patient rooms in an effort to reduce hospital-acquired infections, a new medication dispensing system designed to reduce medication errors, and mechanical lifts that will help prevent patient and staff injuries. Meanwhile, to enhance staff efficiency, the units include decentralized nursing stations that feature staff work stations in each patient room and decentralized medication storage areas designed to reduce medication wait times for patients. To reduce noise, the unit was constructed with acoustical panels and special flooring and ceiling tiles. In addition, each patient room is equipped with an entertainment system that includes a flat screen TV and Internet access with hospital-provided laptop computers. Trinity will open the new unit early this month and plans to incorporate the new design principles in other hospital units in the near future (Intelligencer/Wheeling News-Register, 11/29/08).
