During 2002, the Foundation awarded 1,150 grants and contracts
totaling $556.02 million in support of programs and projects
to improve health and health care in the United States. These
grant funds, viewed in terms of the Foundation's principal
objectives, were distributed as follows:

* In January 2003, the Foundation
revised our access and chronic health conditions
goals to reflect our commitment to improving
the quality of care available to all
Americans. The two revised goal statements are:
to assure that all Americans have access
to quality health care at reasonable cost and
to improve the quality of care and support for
people with chronic health conditions.
