During
2000, the Foundation made 723 grants and 98 contracts, totaling $399.49
million in support of
programs and projects to improve health and health care in the United
States. These grant funds, viewed in terms of the Foundation's principal
objectives, were distributed as follows.

million for programs that assure that all Americans have access
to basic health care at reasonable cost. |

million for programs that improve care and support for people
with chronic health conditions. |

million for other health and health care programs,including
our work force training programs and grants that are consistent
with the foci of our Program Management Teams. |

million for programs that reduce the personal,social,and economic
harm caused by substance abuse tobacco,alcohol,and illicit
drugs. |

$15.87 million for general philanthropy purposes,primarily projects
addressing the Foundations mission in the New Brunswick,
New Jersey area where the Foundation originated.
