This article provides a systematic review of the literature on the relationship between environmental and community factors and childhood obesity. While these factors are thought to contribute to childhood obesity, the nature of the relationship is not well understood.

The Centers for Disease Control is committed to collaborating with the Active Living Research program and other programs related to improving activity levels on a population scale. Although promising areas for change are coming into focus, significant improvements in how much physical activity Americans engage in have yet to be made.

The Active Living Research Program has made great strides toward its initial goals, particularly in growing the knowledge base, fostering cross-disciplinarity, and building financial resources. The major next step will be to use those platforms to extend the ability of research to influence a multitude of activity-related policies.

The Active Living Research Program, launched in 2001, began an era of conducting research focused on changing health behaviors through changes to the environment and to policies. The next phase of the program will intensify those efforts through an even greater emphasis on policy change, focusing on high-risk youth, and other mechanisms.

The Active Living Research Program (ALR) has clearly had a large impact in raising awareness of ALR research and the products of the ALR program. In order to ensure maximum utility of ALR products going forward, the evaluators specified five means of increasing coordination between policy and research activities related to physical activity.

In 2008, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awarded a five-year grant to the Center for Mississippi Health Policy to evaluate the impact of the Mississippi Healthy Students Act and associated regulations on childhood obesity.
