Nurse Practitioners Can Expand Roles in Collaborative Care Units

In the University Hospitals of Cleveland's Collaborative Care Unit, nurse practitioners manage the delivery of care and clinical decision-making. This project examined the impact of the collaborative care model on costs and quality of care at the hospital using a randomized controlled trial over a two-year period.

Examining two 5-year periods, one when HMO enrollment was increasing and one when it was decreasing, shows that HMOs had an effect on lowering hospital costs and revenues, albeit a diminishing one. This study looked at trends in hospital cost and revenue relative to different levels of HMO market structure.
