During 2006 to 2007, TV and radio host Tavis Smiley convened town hall meetings in four U.S. cities to raise awareness of childhood obesity. A key organization in each city then worked to spur state and local efforts to address the growing problem.

Caring Across Communities: Addressing Mental Health Needs of Diverse Children and Youth brought school-connected mental health services to immigrants and refugees in 15 communities in eight states by developing model mental health programs.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation invests in research aimed at reducing childhood obesity. This study, part of a supplement of childhood obesity-related literature, assessed compliance with California Senate Bills 12 and 965 that created strict school nutrition standards.
