Childhood Obesity

More than two-thirds of adults and one-third of children in America are obese or at risk for obesity. To reverse this epidemic, we must identify the policy and environmental changes that lead to increased physical activity and better nutrition. We also must support the advocacy that will result in widespread adoption of those policies.

An Action Agenda for Schools and Communities to Fight Obesity

During 2006 to 2007, TV and radio host Tavis Smiley convened town hall meetings in four U.S. cities to raise awareness of childhood obesity. A key organization in each city then worked to spur state and local efforts to address the growing problem.

Padres Unidos Advocates for Recess Before Lunch

The Healthy Students, Healthy Minds project of Padres Unidos is working with Denver school board officials to implement a recess-before-lunch policy in all public schools, a schedule that gets kids to eat better and reduces discipline problems.

Activities promoting Active Living by Design (ALbD) were implemented at a public elementary school in Chicago over five years. Students enrolled continuously from Grade 1 through Grade 4 had a significantly lower BMI compared with students who had transferred to the school after Grade 1.

This article used the implementation of calorie labeling in fast food restaurants to show that while calorie labeling was associated with a reduction in calories purchased at some major chains, overall, the average number of calories purchased did not change in fast food restaurants.
